Few sculptures in Washington have a more recognizable subject than Thomas Jefferson, and this photograph shows a model for the heroic-scale figure meant to stand in his memorial. The Jefferson Memorial on the Tidal Basin was dedicated in 1943, and its interior statue by sculptor Rudulph Evans was installed a few years later. A photograph of a model made around 1955 captures the stage of the project when a small version of the work was shown and judged, with the finished bronze still to come. Such models let officials and the public see the composition, proportions and pose before the full-size casting was made.
