This color slide shows the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C., with cherry trees in bloom and the white dome of the Jefferson Memorial rising across the water. The trees were a gift from Japan, and the first ones were planted in 1912, with the blossoms drawing crowds every spring. The memorial, designed by John Russell Pope, was dedicated in 1943, so by around 1950 it was still a fairly new landmark. Color slides like this one were becoming a popular way to record such scenes, and the saturated pinks against the pale marble show the setting's appeal.
