The Jefferson Memorial, the domed marble tribute to Thomas Jefferson on the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C., is the subject here, seen at dusk with its reflection held steady in still water. The memorial was dedicated in 1943, on the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth, and its classical design draws on the Pantheon in Rome and on Jefferson's own love of Roman architecture. Pictures taken at this hour show how the white stone takes on a soft glow as the light fades, a quality that made the building a favorite subject for photographers. The Tidal Basin itself was shaped by the same early twentieth-century work that filled in the Potomac flats and gave the capital its cherry trees.
