Set on the south bank of the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C., the Jefferson Memorial is a white marble rotunda honoring Thomas Jefferson, the third president and principal author of the Declaration of Independence. Architect John Russell Pope drew on Roman Neoclassical design, and the building was dedicated on April 13, 1943, the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth, while the country was in the middle of World War II. Inside, a 19-foot bronze statue of Jefferson stands beneath a dome, with passages from his writings carved into the surrounding walls. The memorial remains one of the capital's best-known sites, especially in spring, when the basin's cherry trees draw large crowds.
