The rear of the Thomas Jefferson statue inside the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C., shows a view most visitors never see, since attention usually goes to the figure's front and the inscribed walls. The memorial, designed by John Russell Pope and dedicated in 1943 on the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth, was built on the Tidal Basin to honor the author of the Declaration of Independence and third president. The bronze statue, by sculptor Rudulph Evans, stands beneath a dome, and the quotations carved around the interior are among the memorial's best-known features.
