The memorial pictured here is the Jefferson Memorial on the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C., a domed marble building with a open colonnade that frames a 19-foot bronze statue of Thomas Jefferson. Architect John Russell Pope drew on the Pantheon in Rome for its circular plan, and the memorial was dedicated in 1943 to mark the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth. Its inscriptions include lines from the Declaration of Independence and Jefferson's writings on religious freedom, which make the building as much a statement about his ideas as a tribute to the man.
