The photograph shows the statue of Thomas Jefferson inside the Rotunda at the University of Virginia, the domed building at the center of the campus that Jefferson designed as the heart of the school he founded. Jefferson drew his inspiration from the Pantheon in Rome, and the Rotunda served as the university's library and assembly hall for much of its early history. A fire gutted the building in 1895, and its restoration was still fresh in the years when this glass negative was made. The Detroit Publishing Company produced many such views of American landmarks for travel and souvenir sales around 1900-1910.
