Jefferson Rocks sits at the meeting point of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers, where the water cuts through the Blue Ridge at Harpers Ferry. Thomas Jefferson described this gap in his 1785 "Notes on the State of Virginia," calling it one of the most stupendous scenes in nature, and the view of the rivers from the rocks became a famous stop for travelers. This glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed American towns and landmarks around 1918 to 1920 for sale as postcards and souvenir views. The picture shows the scene as tourists of that era would have known it, before the town's wartime and later preservation efforts reshaped how the site was remembered.
