A bust of Thomas Jefferson, the third president, is the subject here, and busts of him were among the most widely copied likenesses of the nation's early leaders. The best known is the portrait bust Jean-Antoine Houdon made from life in Paris in 1789, while Jefferson was serving as minister to France. Houdon's work set the look many later sculptors and printmakers followed, which helps explain why Jefferson's face became so familiar in American public spaces.
