The Thomas Jefferson Building is the oldest and most ornate of the three buildings that make up the Library of Congress complex in Washington, D.C., and this aerial view sets its sprawling footprint against the city around it. Opened in 1897, the Beaux-Arts structure was designed to show the young nation's ambitions for learning, with marble staircases, gilded mosaics and sculpture throughout its interior. The photograph was taken around 2007 by Carol M. Highsmith, the photographer known for documenting American architecture and landscapes, and it offers a useful reminder of how the building anchors the grounds just east of the Capitol.
