Drawn on stone by Albert Newsam and printed by the Philadelphia firm of P. S. Duval, this portrait shows Thomas Jefferson, the third president, in a format that was widely sold in the 1840s. Jefferson had been dead for about twenty years by then, so prints like this one helped keep his likeness in circulation for a generation that knew him only from history. Publisher C. S. Williams's imprint shows how such portraits moved through the city's print trade. Lithography, which used greasy crayon on limestone, made affordable images of public men common in American parlors and schoolrooms.
