Drawn on a flat limestone block in greasy crayon and printed from the stone, this portrait of Thomas Jefferson was made by lithography rather than engraving, a method that let artists reproduce images with softer tones. The likeness follows Gilbert Stuart's well-known painting of the third president, and the stone was prepared by Maurin and printed by Pendleton in Boston. Lithography was still a fairly new technique in America at the time, and Boston became one of its busiest centers, so prints like this one carried the faces of national leaders into homes and offices.
