Printed from a stone by the Boston lithographer Pendleton, with the drawing credited to Maurin, this portrait reproduces the likeness Gilbert Stuart painted of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States. Lithography was a fast, relatively inexpensive way to multiply a painted portrait, and in the early nineteenth century prints like this carried a leader's face into parlors, schoolrooms and public buildings. Jefferson had served as vice president under John Adams before winning the presidency in 1800, and his image was widely circulated during his lifetime and after. Comparing the print with Stuart's original shows how much a reproduction depended on the engraver's hand.
