Here the sitter is Thomas Jefferson, shown in a head-and-shoulders view turned to the right, a pose that was common in the engraved likenesses circulated during his presidency. The record places the print around 1805, the years of his first term in the White House, when demand for images of the head of government was rising among a growing American readership. Engravings like this one carried a president's face into newspapers, books and parlors in a period before photography, so they served as much as a public statement of authority as a portrait. Its Library of Congress holding in the Prints and Photographs Division makes it a useful document of how the nation pictured its leaders in the early republic.
