The Library of Congress's Jefferson Building, the subject of this wide panoramic view, opened to readers in 1897 after years of construction across from the Capitol. It takes its name from Thomas Jefferson, whose personal collection Congress bought in 1815 to replace the library the British burned during the War of 1812. The long, horizontal format suits the building's sprawling Beaux-Arts facade, with its domes, sculpture and classical detail. The photograph dates from about 1906, only a few years after the building was completed.
