Five delegates gathered to draft the Declaration of Independence, and this print shows that committee at work. Congress appointed the group in June 1776, and Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft, which the others revised before it went to the full Congress. The document was adopted on July 4, 1776. Booth's depiction of the moment is a later artist's interpretation of a small room and a famous text, so it shows how the drafting was remembered more than how it looked at the time.
