Few monuments in St. Louis are tied to the city's history as closely as the Jefferson statue, which honors the third president and the 1803 Louisiana Purchase that brought the region into the United States. The city marked that transfer with the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904, and the memorial's commemorative purpose ties it to that celebration. This glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by Bain News Service, a company that sold news photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. Its images show how civic monuments were recorded and circulated to the public in that era, when the statue was a point of local and national pride.
