This portrait shows Martha Jefferson Randolph, the eldest daughter of Thomas Jefferson, who was known in the family as Patsy. She spent part of her girlhood in Paris with her father, where she attended a convent school and later served as his hostess and companion. After her marriage to Thomas Mann Randolph Jr. in 1790, she managed large households, first at Monticello and later at Edgehill, and she became one of the central figures in the family's life. Her role in keeping Monticello running during the difficult years after her father's death in 1826 is worth remembering when looking at her face in this likeness.
