Drawn by S. Howell Brown from an actual survey that marks individual farm limits, this hand-colored map shows Jefferson County, Virginia, as it stood on the eve of a major political change. Dated around 1863, it predates the admission of West Virginia to the Union that year, and Jefferson County would become part of the new state rather than remain in Virginia. The map's attention to property lines makes it a useful record of the rural landscape along the Potomac during the Civil War.
