Rather than a single town, this lithograph takes in all of Jefferson County, Wisconsin, drawn as if seen from a great height over its farms, villages and roads. Bird's-eye views like this were a popular way to promote towns and counties in the decades after the Civil War, when settlers were filling the Midwest and local businesses wanted to advertise. The artist Albert Ruger, who worked from Madison, produced many such panoramas, and this one was printed by the Chicago Lithographing Company. Today viewers often read these prints for the layout of the land and the buildings that once stood there, though the perspective is partly imagined and tends to idealize the places it shows.
