The painted inscription, "This room is dedicated to Thomas Jefferson," shows that this mural was meant as a formal tribute to the third president and principal author of the Declaration of Independence, not just as decoration. Many public buildings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries paired murals with dedication wording like this to link civic spaces with the nation's founders. The record does not name the artist or the building, but the text itself makes the mural's purpose clear.
