Few days in American newspaper history brought such a pairing of news. On the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson died at Monticello in Virginia around midday, and John Adams died that evening at his home in Quincy, Massachusetts. This broadside, issued as an extra, shows how quickly printers rushed special editions into the streets. The two men had been political rivals before reconciling in their later years through a long and celebrated correspondence. Contemporaries were struck by the coincidence of their deaths on the same date, and that sense of wonder is part of what this sheet preserves.
