Start with the vantage itself: this is a bird's eye view, a panoramic drawing made from a high imagined angle so that the whole town of Jefferson City, the capital of Missouri, spreads across one sheet. Alfred Ruger, the artist credited with the drawing, worked in the tradition of the bird's eye view, which was popular in the decades after the Civil War as a way for towns to show their streets, churches, and public buildings in a single picture. Dated to about 1869, the map shows the capitol rising above the Missouri River bluffs, a reminder of how central state government and river commerce were to the city's growth.
