The Old Capitol at Williamsburg, Virginia, stands out here for the horse-drawn colonial coach parked before it, a reminder that the town was the seat of royal government in the 18th century. The capital moved to Williamsburg in 1699 and remained there until 1780, when it was shifted to Richmond. Thomas Jefferson studied law and served in the House of Burgesses in this period, making the building part of his early political world. Burned in 1747 and rebuilt, the structure was restored in the 1930s as part of the Colonial Williamsburg project, so the scene reflects both the colonial past and the twentieth-century effort to recreate it.
