The College of William & Mary, chartered in 1693, is the second-oldest institution of higher learning in the United States, and its campus in Williamsburg, Virginia, is one of the most recognizable early American college grounds still in use. Williamsburg served as the capital of colonial Virginia until 1780, when the seat of government moved to Richmond, and the college's Wren Building, begun in the late 1690s, anchors the old town's historic core. Thomas Jefferson studied at the college in the 1760s, a connection that explains why this view appears in a board devoted to him. Look for the building's brick walls and its steep roofs, which reflect the Georgian style common to the period.
