Williamsburg, the capital of colonial Virginia, is the subject here, and the record places the view around 1740. That date comes from an unverified shelflist card, and no date is recorded, so it is best read as an estimate. From 1699 until the capital moved to Richmond in 1780, Williamsburg was the seat of the colonial government and the home of the College of William and Mary, founded in 1693. Thomas Jefferson studied there in the early 1760s, which is why the town is often linked with his name on this board. A view labeled for a period this early may also show the town as it looked later.
