Few places in colonial America carry as much weight as the College of William and Mary, chartered in 1693 and the second oldest college in the English colonies after Harvard. This wood engraving shows the campus in Williamsburg, the capital of Virginia until 1780, when the seat of government moved to Richmond. Thomas Jefferson studied there in the 1760s, and the school's roster of students and faculty later included several figures who shaped the early republic. Engravings like this one were popular in the late nineteenth century, when illustrated magazines and books sought out historic sites and presented them to a national audience.
