Few portraits of Thomas Jefferson were drawn by a close friend, and this one was made by Tadeusz Kosciuszko, the Polish-Lithuanian officer who served as an engineer in the American Revolution and remained one of Jefferson's warmest admirers. The engraving was cut by Sokolnicki, and its French inscription and the spelling "Patriote" suggest the print was meant for European viewers as well as Americans. Its title, which calls Jefferson a philosopher, patriot, and friend, reflects Kosciuszko's personal regard for him.
