This Jefferson is a right-profile engraving, not a painted or full-face portrait, which sets it apart from most likenesses of the president. Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Mémin, a French émigré working in America, made profiles like this one with a physionotrace, a device that traced the sitter's outline before the engraving was made. Produced in Washington in 1804, while Jefferson was serving his first term as president, the print reflects the Neoclassical taste for crisp profile likenesses in the early Republic.
