Jefferson's face turns just to the right in this mezzotint, a tonal engraving process that builds soft gradations of light and shadow rather than relying on lines alone. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year of production is uncertain, but mezzotint portraits of this kind were widely reproduced in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, when Jefferson's likeness circulated among admirers and political supporters. Its value to researchers lies in showing how his public image was shaped by the printmaking trade of his era.
