Engraved by T. Johnson after Gilbert Stuart's painting, this bust-length portrait shows Thomas Jefferson turned to the left. It appeared in the Century Magazine in 1887, when the magazine was running illustrated pieces on the nation's presidents and reproducing older paintings as engravings. Stuart painted Jefferson more than once, and his likenesses became the standard visual model for the third president. Line engraving was slow, hand-cut work, so the fine lines in the face and coat are worth a closer look.
