Turned to the left in a close bust format, this c1904 likeness of Thomas Jefferson belongs to a long line of reproductions that made the third president's face familiar in books and classrooms. Jefferson (1743–1826) wrote the Declaration of Independence and served as president from 1801 to 1809. Around 1904, many such images were copied from earlier paintings, especially those by Gilbert Stuart, who painted Jefferson from life in the early 1800s.
