Shown in a bust portrait turned to the left, this engraving presents Thomas Jefferson in the style of the early republic's printed portraits, when images of the third president circulated in books, newspapers, and parlors. T. Kelly cut the plate from a painting by Bass Otis, a reminder that many Americans of the period knew their leaders through reproductions rather than original canvases. The caption card gives no date, so the plate's exact age remains uncertain. Notice the fine parallel lines that build the tones of the face and coat.
