This 1864 portrait shows Abraham Lincoln standing, shown three-quarters length and turned to his left. The photographer was James F. Gibson, who worked in Washington during the war, a period when Lincoln sat for many portraits as the nation struggled through the conflict and prepared for the 1864 election. The record describes it as a copy negative on a glass dry plate, made from an existing photographic print, so the image reached later viewers through a second reproduction. It is part of the Library of Congress's Civil War photograph collection.
