This photomechanical print reproduces a Gilbert Stuart painting of Thomas Jefferson, shown in three-quarter length, seated at a table and turned toward the left. Stuart painted several likenesses of Jefferson, and his images became the standard visual model for the third president, so they were copied often in the decades after Jefferson's death in 1826. By the 1890s, photomechanical processes made such reproductions inexpensive, which let them circulate in books, magazines, and popular histories. The record notes a U.S. Copyright Office entry, a reminder that reproductions of well-known paintings were registered as works in their own right.
