Lincoln sits squarely facing the camera in this quarter-plate daguerreotype, a three-quarter-length view that shows him seated rather than standing, as many early portraits were. Daguerreotypes like this one were made on silvered copper plates, producing a single mirror-like positive image that cannot be copied the way later paper prints can. The picture dates to around 1846 or 1847, when Lincoln was practicing law in Springfield, Illinois, and had just been elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, making it one of the earliest surviving photographs of him.
