This print reproduces a Gilbert Stuart painting of Thomas Jefferson, shown seated at a table in three-quarter length and turned toward the left. Stuart, a leading portraitist of the early republic, painted Jefferson from life in the early 1800s, and his likenesses became the standard images of the third president. The print dates to around 1898, when photomechanical processes made it cheap to circulate paintings like this in books, magazines and popular illustrated sets. Its notation of registration with the U.S. Copyright Office shows that the reproduction itself was treated as a protected work.
