Jefferson sits at a table in this three-quarter length view, turned toward the left, in a pose that suggests he is pausing over his papers. The composition is by Gilbert Stuart, who returned to Jefferson's likeness more than once in the early 1800s. This sheet is a photogravure, a process that transfers a photograph onto an etched copper plate to produce soft, painterly tones. Campbell Prints of New York issued it in the 1940s, when reproducing national portraits for wide circulation was a common practice.
