Rather than a sitting from life, this is a photograph of a painted portrait: Lincoln is shown seated, three-quarter length, turned toward the right. The image was copied from a Waterman painting that itself drew on a Meserve photoprint, so it sits two steps removed from the original sitter's camera. Photographer Mayes of Bloomington, Illinois, made the copy, and the town's link to Lincoln is worth noting, since he spoke there in 1856 at the state's first Republican convention. Copies like this were widely circulated in the late 1800s, when portraits of the president were in steady demand in homes and public buildings.
