Cropped from a larger seated portrait, this small albumen print isolates Lincoln's head and shoulders, turned slightly to the left. It records a sitting at Alexander Gardner's Washington studio on Sunday, February 5, 1865, a date that later research has settled on after the session was long assumed to have taken place on April 10. That makes it the last photographic session from life for a president who was assassinated in April 1865. Gardner's portraits of Lincoln were widely copied during the war years, and this image remains a close record of his appearance in his final months.
