Taken from life in Springfield, Illinois, in June 1860, this likeness began as a sitting with the local photographer Charles A. Barry, and the lithograph carries that image to a national audience. Lincoln had been nominated as the Republican candidate for president only weeks earlier, and portraits like this were copied widely during the campaign that autumn. The print was made by J.H. Bufford's Lithographer in Boston and issued through Thayer & Eldridge, a firm known for antislavery publications, which helped spread Lincoln's face well beyond Illinois.
