Taken in Chicago in October 1854, this portrait shows Abraham Lincoln while he was campaigning for a seat in the U.S. Senate. The Kansas-Nebraska Act had reopened the national debate over slavery's expansion that year, and it drew Lincoln back into active politics after a few quiet years out of office. The original image was a daguerreotype, the dominant portrait process of the 1850s, and it survives at the Chicago Historical Society. This gelatin silver print was made much later, from a copy of that early image, so it preserves the look of a mid-century campaign portrait.
