Few presidential portraits show the whole household, which makes this family picture stand apart from the many solo images of Lincoln on the board. Photographs of Lincoln with Mary Todd Lincoln and their sons were taken at a time when the family had already known heavy loss, including the deaths of Eddie in 1850 and Willie in 1862. Only Robert survived to adulthood, so the sons' faces here carry a weight that later viewers often notice. Pictures like this show Lincoln as a husband and father, not only as the wartime leader most people remember.
