Unlike the many portraits of Lincoln alone on this board, this color lithograph shows him with his younger son, Thaddeus, known as Tad. The boy, born in 1853, was famously lively and was allowed unusual freedom around the White House during the Civil War, where his father often stopped to look in on him. Printed by L. Prang & Co. of Boston, a firm known for its color lithographs, the piece reflects the late nineteenth-century taste for sentimental family scenes of the president. Tad died in 1871, and images like this one helped keep his memory alive.
