Lincoln is shown here seated at a desk with the Emancipation Proclamation spread before him, a composition that turns a signing scene into a patriotic tableau. The print was issued by the Strobridge Lithograph Co. of Cincinnati, a firm that produced large colored lithographs for the popular market in the late nineteenth century. Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation in September 1862 and the final version took effect on January 1, 1863, so by the late 1880s the document had become a central symbol of his legacy. Pictures like this one helped shape how Americans remembered the president as the Great Emancipator.
