Few documents of the Civil War carried as much weight as the Emancipation Proclamation, and this decorative broadside sets its text within an ornamental frame. Lincoln issued a preliminary version on September 22, 1862, warning that enslaved people in Confederate-held areas would be declared free on January 1, 1863, and the final text followed that January. Printed broadsides like this one were displayed in homes, churches and schools, especially among Black families who saw the document as a public promise. The decorative treatment shows how the proclamation was valued as a keepsake as well as a legal order.
