Lincoln's visit to the Antietam battlefield in October 1862 produced some of the most recognizable images of his presidency, and this one shows him outdoors in front of a tent with a group of officers around him. Among them are General George B. McClellan, Colonel Alexander S. Webb, Dr. Jonathan Letterman, the Army's Medical Director, and General Henry J. Hunt. Alexander Gardner made the photograph in the weeks after the battle, when the Union army was still camped near Sharpsburg, Maryland. The print here was made later, around 1866, and it appeared in Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the War.
