The title dates this piece to 1861, the year armed conflict began between the Union and the Confederacy. Its subject is the opening of the war, which followed the secession of seven Deep South states over the winter of 1860 and 1861. The first shots came on April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces bombarded Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, and the garrison surrendered the next day. Abraham Lincoln, inaugurated only weeks earlier, was the president who had to respond, and prints like this one circulated widely to explain a crisis that many Americans had feared but few had expected to turn into full-scale war.
