Lincoln is the subject here rather than a holiday scene, which makes this portrait an unusual fit for a Thanksgiving collection. His connection to the holiday is a proclamation he signed on October 3, 1863, setting a national day of thanksgiving on the last Thursday of November. Magazine editor Sarah Josepha Hale had campaigned for a national holiday for years, and Lincoln's proclamation came in the middle of the Civil War, when the country was looking for common ground. Portraits of him from those years were widely reproduced, so images like this one show how many Americans kept his face in view during that time.
