Titled "Our Next President," this print presents Abraham Lincoln as a candidate rather than a sitting officeholder, a framing that places it in the 1860 campaign season. Lincoln, a former Illinois congressman, had won the Republican nomination that May, and his supporters produced portraits like this one to introduce him to voters who knew little about him. Campaign images of the period were often cheap, mass-printed, and meant to be pinned up, carried, or traded, so they show how a candidate's face and name were spread through the country. Looking at it today, you can see how a rising politician was packaged for a national audience just months before the election.
